Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise at the age of a small child. She worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt the time she needed during the days to be able to enjoy art, literature and theatre. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay discovered that art can be a powerful tool to promote activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught her to say something by using the arts. Even though DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents, she always spent summers in Lowndes County Alabama where her dad's family was a part of the same for several generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers she spent there to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was still in school. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned the task of watching the house and examining the waste of one of jurors. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was handed, DuVernay determined to make a move in publicity. DuVernay was hired for her first gig as a publicist at an unassuming production studio after graduating from college. After this, she founded her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The company also launched a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective.
