Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was raised in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of artwork and inspiration. Her aunt was a nurse who worked shifts at night so that she could dedicate her day to art literature, theater and other interests. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she was able to introduce her. DuVernay learned by example that art could be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who had a moral compass and urged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and brought up. The DuVernay's father was a witness to the Civil Rights marches that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the time they spent there to help in her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American studies. While she was still a student DuVernay was interested in creating to the broadcast media. She started working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned duty of looking after the residence and scrutinizing the rubbish of one jurors. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalism due to the work that she was assigned, the journalist was inspired to start a new career in publicity. After this, she founded her own company for public relations that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also established a range of social media and lifestyle networks, including those like the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
